The objective of the IVAM, Institut Valencià d’Art Modern, is knowledge expansion, protection, promotion and diffusion of modern and contemporary art. Its programme of activities includes the exhibition of its art collection, the organization of temporary exhibitions and the edition of catalogues and other publications that go into the topics of the exhibits in depth, as well as the organization of conferences, courses, workshops and concerts that are related to the works on display and other areas in contemporary art. It has two sections: the Centre Julio González, a building of new construction which was inaugurated in 1989 and shows the museum collection together with temporary exhibitions, and the Sala de la Muralla, a gallery below ground level with the remains of the mediaeval ramparts of the city that houses temporary exhibitions.
