TALKS Master Talks 19 to 26 February at 20,00h. This series of talks is a result of the collaboration agreement with the AMELA Foundation and is coordinated by Ángel Kalenberg, Director of the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Montevideo. It will feature speakers of the highest level in the field of thinking about and analysing contemporary art, including the art historian Hans Belting, Fumio Nanjo, Director of the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Alfred Pacquement, Director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Francisco Calvo Serraller, Professor of Art History, Jean Baudrillard, sociologist, Arthur C. Danto, Professor Emeritus at Columbia University, and José Vidal Beneyto, President of the AMELA Foundation. The talks will analyse theoretical aspects of art, introducing us to the most original ideas about the problems that confront museums nowadays, such as collecting, power and management, and possible solutions. MUSIC First performance of the Symphonic Overture “IVAM” 18 February at 19,00h. This composition by Ferrer Ferran, musician, conductor, composer and professor, will be performed by the Band of the Federation of Music Societies of the Valencian Community to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern. Concert by Josele Santiago 19 February at 23,00h. In this performance, Josele uses music to transport us to his inner world. Josele was awarded the Critics’ Prize for the best album of 2004 for his first disc, Las Golondrinas Etcétera (Swallows Etc.). In his latest work, Garabatos (Doodles), we find little musical jewels ranging from rock with a touch of music hall to a Brazilian rumba connection. “No to no” by Carles Santos 20 February at 23,00h. In this piano concert, the versatile Carles Santos will display his professionalism with the experience and reflection accumulated with his work in a variety of artistic settings. Concert by IVAM Special Jazz Ensemble 24 February at 23,00h. This performance by a team consisting of the most important figures in Valencian and international jazz, Jorge Pardo, Dave Schnitter, Sole Jiménez, Ximo Tebar, Ricardo Belda, Luis Llario and Jeff Jerolamon, will present a special concert for the IVAM’s anniversary. Performance by Grup Instrumental 25 February at 20,00h. A concert by this Valencian group which was awarded the National Music Prize in 2005 and has become a landmark of modernity. The members of the group will play compositions inspired by the work of artists such as Karel Appel, James Rosenquist, Millares, Lucio Fontana, Giacomo Balla, Moholy-Nagy, Robert Frank, Cai Guo-Qiang, Guy Hundere, Kimsooja or Sergio Prego, who feature in the exhibitions Speed 1, 2 and 3. Concert by Sugar Blue Blues Band 27 February at 23,00h. This powerful performance by the Harlem musician Sugar Blue, harmonica virtuoso and recipient of a Grammy award, will draw us into the feeling and sensuality of the blues. VIDEO ART Showing of videos by Ulises Pistolo Eliza 21 February at 23,00h. Fourteen videos of performances by this artist, showing his experiments, rituals and actions and the exploratory work in which he interrelates music, images, light, sound and new technologies. FILM Showing of the film “Safety Last!” 23 February at 23,00h. This film, directed by Fred Newmeyer and Sam Taylor and starring Harold Lloyd and Mildred Davis, and with a live piano accompaniment, will pay tribute to the classics of silent cinema as a new form of interactive artistic experimentation involving the audience, the music and the showing of the film. DANCE Speed Laboratory 18 February at 12,30 Dance performance by the choreographers and dancers Meritxel Barberá and Inma García, in which they will make a study of speed by means of bodily expression and contemporary dance. They will create a rhythmic composition of bodies emerging in a constant speed of movement, in which the bodies are more like parts of a large structure that needs them all in order to move at the greatest possible speed, seeking languages and codes in creation with the requirement of constant innovation. PERFORMANCE Performance of “Orpheus” by Ulises Pistolo Eliza 21 February at 23,00h. In this performance the artist explores the concept of the music of the spheres devised by Pythagoras, in which he postulated that the planets generate harmonic frequencies. During it, by internalization it will be possible to hear the sound of the sun and our planet merging with European medieval instruments. Performance of “Smoke Makes Signals” by Domingo Sánchez Blanco 22 February at 23,00h. The IVAM, in collaboration with Galería Argenta of Valencia, will present the latest work by this innovative, impact-making artist, who, together with the bailaor Eduardo “el Güito” Serrano and accompanied by two guitarists, will present a performance inspired by flamenco art. DESIGN Parade of footwear by the designer Álvaro Carpena 18 February at 19,15h. This fashion parade by the Alicante designer Álvaro Carpena presents the speed acquired in our century from a novel viewpoint, through the world of footwear, lasts, patterns, leather and accessories.
